The company was founded in 1976 by Mr Hendro Tedjokusumo serving two routes, namely Kudus-Jakarta and Solo-Jakarta PP. In 1993, Pahala Kencana developed a cargo business called Pahala Express and a travel agent called PT Pahala Tours & Travel. Seven years after that, Pahala Kencana launched Nirwana Luxury Tourist Bus as a bus and vehicle loan service. In the same year, Hendro Tedjokusumo moved the PO Pahala Kencana head office to Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.

Pahala Kencana now serves 86 routes in more than 90 cities in Indonesia, including on the islands of Bali, Madura, and Sumatra.
